능소화 피던 서울을 다녀가다 The Trumpet Creeper in Seoul

이번 9월말에 한국을 잠시 다녀갔다. 한국은 초가을이라 아직 여름의 기운이 완연하였다. 사람들은 여전히 반팔 차림이었고, 긴 옷을 입기에는 여전히 날이 더웠다. 나는 경복궁 근처에 서촌에 머물렀다. 서울의 구도심인 서촌 쪽은 아직 예전의 모습을 많이 간직하고 있었다. 많은 빌딩들 쪽을 걷다가 서촌, 그 동네에 다다르면 시간이 예전으로 돌아간듯한 기분이 들었다. 그곳 골목 사이사이에 능소화가 피고 있었다.

I visited Korea briefly at the end of September.
Although it was already early autumn, the warmth of summer still lingered in the air. People walked around in short sleeves, and the weather was still too hot for long clothes. I stayed in Seochon, near Gyeongbokgung Palace. This old neighborhood, tucked inside central Seoul, has retained much of its traditional charm. After passing rows of tall, modern buildings, stepping into Seochon felt like moving backward in time. And there, in the narrow alleyways, the trumpet creeper bloomed.

능소화가 피는 계절은 여름이다. 대강 태양이 강렬해지는 5월 정도부터 피기 시작하여서 여름 한철 내내 피고 초가을에도 여전히 그 우아함을 뽐내는 꽃이다. 예전 한국의 어느 고등학교에서 근무하였을 때 교정에 심겨진 능소화는 아직도 기억에 생생하다. 바로 옆 오동나무를 의지하며 타고 올라가는 꽃덩굴은 무척 장관이어서 옛날 이야기에 나오는 모습 같다고 늘 생각했었다. 떨어진 능소화를 작은 유리컵에 담아서 책상에 두었던 기억이 아직도 새롭다.

The trumpet creeper blossoms in summer. It begins around May, when the sunlight grows bold and intense, and continues to flourish through the season, lingering well into early autumn. When I once worked at a high school in Korea, I remember the trumpet creeper that grew in the courtyard, climbing along the side of a paulownia tree. It was so striking that it looked like something out of an old folktale. I still remember gathering the fallen blossoms in a small glass cup and placing them on my desk.

나는 능소화를 좋아한다. 그 꽃은 강렬한 색이 아니다. 은은한 주황색과 노란색이 초록색의 넝쿨과 어우러져서 담장이나 지붕을 덮는데, 그 늘어지며 피어나는 그 자태가 이루 말할 수 없이 아름답다.

I have always loved the trumpet creeper. The flower is not overly vivid; its gentle orange and yellow blend gracefully into the green vines that drape over walls and rooftops. Their languid, cascading shapes are indescribably beautiful.

능소화는 양반꽃으로 알려져있다. 양반의 집에서만 키울 수 있다는 말이다. 고단하고 바삐 살아야했던 서민의 집에서 키우기는 어려웠으리라. 능소화는 기다림의 꽃으로도 알려져있다. 궁녀가 임금을 사모하다 그 병이 사무쳐서 죽었는데 능소화로 다시 태어났다고 한다. 애절한 기다림의 꽃, 고상한 꽃.

The trumpet creeper is known in Korea as a “noble flower,” once believed to be grown only in aristocratic households. It was said to be difficult for commoners to cultivate—a flower for those whose lives were not rushed or burdened by constant labor. It is also remembered as a blossom of longing: a court lady, hopelessly in love with the king, died of sorrow and was reborn as this flower. A flower of quiet yearning, of refined elegance.

나는 이 능소화를 호주에서도 키우고 싶었는데, 이를 파는 판매처를 찾기가 어려웠다. 어느 몇 해 전, 길을 가다가 어느 집 정원에 심겨진 능소화를 발견했을 때가 아직도 생생하다. 그런데 그 모양이 한국의 그것보다 조금 더 크고 색은 붉은 색에 훨씬 가까웠다. 호주의 토양과 기후가 그것을 달리 만들었으리라. 그리하여 호주에서 능소화를 키우겠다는 내 열망은 생각보다 모양과 색이 차이가 있어서 그만 두기로 하였다.

I once hoped to grow trumpet creepers here in Australia, but it was difficult to find a place that sold them. Years ago, I spotted one in someone’s garden while walking along the street. The blossoms were larger and more reddish than those in Korea—perhaps shaped differently by the soil and climate of this land. Realizing that the flowers would never look the same, I eventually let go of the idea of growing them myself.

능소화는 꽃이 질 때 그 모양이 흐트러지지 않고 꽃이 통으로 떨어진다. 바닥에 여기저기 있는 능소화는 생각보다 단단하여서, 여전히 그 아름다움을 견고하게 유지한다. 능소화에게도 생의 주기가 있되 죽음에 이르러서도 아름답게 가는 모습이 좋은 것일까.

왜 이토록 이 꽃을 그리워하고, 또 이 꽃을 보기 위해서 다시 한국에 가고 싶은지 이유를 잘 모르겠다.

나의 꽃 능소화.

When the trumpet creeper falls, the blossom stays intact and drops to the ground as a whole. Scattered on the earth, each bloom remains firm and beautiful. Even at the end of its life cycle, it does not lose its form. Perhaps that is why I find this flower so moving—because even in its final moments, it remains elegant.

I do not fully understand why I miss this flower so dearly, or why I long to return to Korea just to see it again.

But it is my flower—the trumpet creeper.
