How Do You Say “I Love You” in Korean?

What is the most frequently heard expression in Korean films and dramas?

What kind of words do Koreans love to hear?

And how do we express love, perhaps the most universal of all human emotions?

Even if we know very little of another language, most of us know at least two or three ways to say “I love you” in different languages.

In Korean, there are three familiar expressions:

사랑해 (saranghae).

사랑해요 (saranghaeyo).

사랑합니다 (saranghamnida).

The Korean word 사랑 (sarang) means love. It refers to a feeling of deeply cherishing and valuing someone or something. This is the primary definition, although the word carries other nuances as well.

To cherish someone or something deeply and consider them precious.

That is the essence of 사랑 (sarang).

When we add the verb ending -하다 (-hada), we get 사랑하다 (saranghada), the dictionary form of the verb “to love”.

Korean has quite a number of verbs ending in -하다 (-hada). But that is a topic for another day.

Like other Korean verbs, 사랑하다 (saranghada) can be conjugated into different forms depending on the level of politeness and formality.

Here are three common ways to express it:

1. Casual speech (반말, banmal)

사랑해 (saranghae)

This is an informal expression, commonly used with close friends, family members, romantic partners, or someone younger.

2. Polite but informal speech (해요체, haeyoche)

사랑해요 (saranghaeyo)

This is polite but conversational. It is suitable for everyday situations and people with whom we maintain a degree of respect.

3. Formal and polite speech (합니다체, hamnida-che)

사랑합니다 (saranghamnida)

This is the more formal and respectful expression, often used in formal settings, speeches, or public declarations.

In Korean, the way we speak and the words we choose are influenced by factors such as age, social position, and the relationship between speakers.

But today is a day to talk about love.

So, all you have to do is choose one.

What would you say to someone you truly cherish and hold dear?

사랑해 (saranghae).

사랑해요 (saranghaeyo).

사랑합니다 (saranghamnida).

Another year is slowly coming to an end.

Over the remaining two months of this year, I hope we can tell the people we love just how much they mean to us, a little more often.

I am changing, and so are the people around me. None of us can stay by each other's side forever, no matter how much we wish they could.

So why not say it today?

사랑해.
