‘지구를 지켜라’ 를 다시 보고 Revisiting Save the Green Planet!: A Korean Cult Film That Returns as Memory

2003년에 이 영화가 나왔으니 벌써 23년이 되었다. 그 당시 장난스러운 영화 포스터는 별로 나의 주목을 끌지 못했던 것 같다. 물파스를 들고, 우스꽝스러운 헬멧을 쓰고 의뭉스럽게 웃고 있는 주인공 병구의 모습은 영화의 내용이 무엇인지 도무지 짐작이 가지 않을 정도였다. SF영화인가? 아니면 환경을 지키는 환경운동가의 이야기인가? 아니면 그 당시 잘 나가던 신하균의 로맨틱 코미디인가? 발랄한 독립영화인가? 그러면서 이 영화에 대한 관심이 사그라들 무렵, 주변에서 하나 둘 이 영화를 봤다는 사람들의 한결같은 말이 있었다.

“기발하다”

“이 영화는 기발하다. 그러니 꼭 봐라.”

궁금했지만 사람들의 관심이 올라갈 때쯤 오히려 더 이 영화를 보기가 꺼려졌다. 도대체 제목도 ‘지구를 지켜라’가 뭐란 말인가. 유치하기 짝이 없었다.

한참이 지난 후에 이 영화를 보았다. 어떤 계기로 어디서 누구와 보았는지 기억이 나지 않는다. 그만큼 영화 자체가 강렬한 인상을 주었다는 것일 수도 있겠다. 그랬다. 이 영화는

기.발.했.다.

이 영화가 내 청춘 어딘가에서 하나의 기억으로 남아 있다는 게 다행이라는 생각이 들었다.

최근에 ‘부고니아’가 개봉해서 화제를 끌고 있다.

호주의 뜨거운 여름을 지내면서 휴일이 되면 시원한 극장 안에서 시간을 보내는 일이 잦았다. 그리고 ‘부고니아’를 보려고 하니 이 영화의 원작이 ‘지구를 지켜라’인 것을 알았다. 내 청춘의 빛나는 경험 중에 하나였던 ‘지구를 지켜라’는 훗날 호주에서의 이민 생활을 하면서 다시 부메랑으로 돌아왔다.

‘부고니아’를 보려하니, 역시 ‘지구를 지켜라’를 다시 한번 보아야겠다는 생각이 들었다. 여러 플랫폼을 찾아 봤지만 결국 찾기가 어려워서 DVD를 어렵게 구했다.

기억 속에 사그라졌던 장면들이 다시 떠올랐다. 젊은 신하균은 극 속으로 빨려들어가서 정말 바보스럽고 처연했다. 사람의 경험이 어쩌면 이렇게 슬픔으로만 다져져 있을까. 영화는 슬프기만 하고 외롭기만 한 병구의 모습을 오히려 우스꽝스럽게 묘사함으로써 관객들로 하여금 더욱 예측 불가능하게 만든다.

‘부고니아’를 보고자 하거나 이미 봤던 당신, 반드시 ‘지구를 지켜라’를 보길 바란다. 당신도 빛나는 기억을 가질 수 있게 될 것이다.

It has been 23 years since this film was released in 2003. At the time, the playful movie poster failed to catch my attention. The image of Byeong-gu holding a bottle of ointment, wearing a ridiculous helmet, and smiling slyly gave no clue as to what kind of story the film was trying to tell. Was it science fiction? A tale about an environmental activist protecting the planet? A romantic comedy starring the then-popular Shin Ha-kyun? Or perhaps a bright, quirky independent film?

As my curiosity gradually faded, I began to hear a recurring comment from people around me who had seen the film.

“It’s ingenious.”

“The film is ingenious. You have to watch it.”

Despite my curiosity, I found myself even more reluctant to see it as public interest grew. Even the title—Save the Green Planet!—felt embarrassingly childish.

Much later, I finally watched the film. I no longer remember where, why, or with whom I saw it. Perhaps that is because the film itself left such a powerful impression. It did.

It was ingenious.

I felt grateful that this film had remained somewhere in my youth as a lasting memory.

Recently, Bugonia was released and began to attract attention. Spending the hot Australian summer, I often found myself escaping into the cool darkness of cinemas on my days off. While planning to watch Bugonia, I discovered that its original source was Save the Green Planet!. A film that had once been a shining experience of my youth returned to me like a boomerang during my immigrant life in Australia.

Before watching Bugonia, I felt compelled to revisit Save the Green Planet! once more. I searched through multiple platforms but could not find it, and eventually managed to obtain a DVD with some difficulty.

Scenes that had faded in my memory resurfaced. A young Shin Ha-kyun was utterly absorbed into the role—foolish, pitiful, and heartbreakingly sincere. How could a person’s life be shaped by nothing but sorrow? The film portrays Byeong-gu’s loneliness and grief in an almost comical way, making the story even more unpredictable for the audience.

If you are planning to watch Bugonia, or if you already have, I strongly encourage you to watch Save the Green Planet! as well. You, too, may find yourself carrying away a shining memory of your own.
