입춘을 맞이하면서 Entering Spring
한국은 음력을 따져서 24절기를 나누었다. 24절기는 태양의 길이와 그에 따른 계절을 따져서, 그 이름을 명명하였다. 어제는 입춘이었는데, 말하자면 ‘봄에 들어왔다’는 뜻이다.

“입춘대길!”
Korea traditionally divides the year into what are known as the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, based on the sun’s path and the seasonal changes it brings. Each term is carefully named to reflect a subtle shift in nature. Ipchun, which arrived yesterday, literally means “entering spring.”
Although the New Year officially begins on January 1 according to the solar calendar, this date still lies in the depths of winter for Koreans. For that reason, Ipchun—arriving about a month later—is often regarded as the more practical beginning of the year. This year, Ipchun fell on February 4. About ten days later comes Lunar New Year’s Day, Seollal, when the year truly begins in earnest. In this sense, Ipchun is a time of preparation, while Seollal marks the moment when the year begins in full and one grows a year older. This year, Seollal falls on February 17.
On Ipchun, people traditionally write a phrase wishing great fortune for the year ahead—“Ipchun Daegil” (立春大吉)—and place it on the front gate of their homes. Even as the ground remains frozen and snow lingers from winter, one senses life quietly stirring beneath the surface, stretching and preparing to emerge. It feels inevitable, a gentle reminder of nature’s steady order.
I hope that the good fortune invited at Ipchun will settle gently into daily life and remain there throughout the year. I hope to live in harmony with nature’s rhythm, allowing those efforts to lead to meaning and tangible outcomes. When things do not seem to work out, I hope such moments are merely small disturbances—necessary pauses before something better begins to unfold.
