치맥으로 대동단결 Bonding Over Chicken and Beer

세계 굴지의 칩 회사인 엔비디아 대표인 젠슨 황이 서울을 찾았다. 그는 한국의 대표 기업인 삼성전자와 현대 자동차 대표를 만났는데 그 만난 장소가 화제이다.

Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA — one of the world’s most influential chipmakers — recently visited Seoul.
There, he met with the heads of South Korea’s leading companies, Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor.
What drew even more attention than the meeting itself was the venue.

흔히 외국의 유수한 인물들이 방문할 때는 그 시의성을 감안하여 좋은 장소를 찾아서 만남의 행사를 개최하기 마련이다. 한국에는 코엑스COEX라는 곳이 있고, 대형 호텔들이 물론 있고, 프레스 센터도 있다. 하지만 이번 회동의 경우는 무척 색달랐다. 바로 서울의 작은 치킨집에서 만난 것이다. 그 치킨집 이름은 ‘깐부치킨’이다.

When prominent global figures visit Korea, their schedules are usually arranged at prestigious locations that reflect the importance of the occasion: COEX convention center, luxury hotels, or major press facilities.
However, this gathering was markedly different.
They met at a small local fried chicken restaurant in Seoul named “Kkanbu Chicken.”

깐부라는 이름은 어원이 밝혀지지 않은 말이지만 60년대 70년대 어린 아이들이 구슬치기·딱지치기에서 같은 편을 맺을 때 쓰던 말로, 친한 단짝·짝꿍을 뜻한다. 깐부라는 말은 또한 오징어게임에서 주인공과 다른 참가자가 동맹을 맺으면서 언급되어서 다시 한번 회자된 말이기도 하다. 혹자의 말에 의하면 젠슨 황이 그 깐부라는 이름 때문에 이곳을 선택하였다고 하니, 이 세 기업 총수의 만남은 단순히 서민 경험 내지는 한국 문화 체험 그 이상이라는 생각이 든다.

“Kkanbu” is an old Korean word whose precise origin is unclear.
It was commonly used by children in the 1960s and 70s when playing games like marbles or slap-match, referring to a close teammate or buddy — essentially, a loyal friend. The term ‘Kkanbu’ was also mentioned in Squid Game, when the main character formed an alliance with another participant, bringing the word back into popular discussion.
Some say Jensen Huang specifically chose this spot because he was drawn to the meaning of the name.
If so, the meeting among the heads of these three companies goes beyond a simple taste of everyday Korean culture — it symbolizes camaraderie.

그들은 그 치킨집에서 치킨과 소맥을 먹었다고 한다. 흔히 요새 ‘치맥’이라는 말들을 자주 하는데, 치맥은 ‘치킨과 맥주’라는 말의 줄임말이다. 젠슨 황은 치맥을 먹었고, 또한 소주와 맥주를 섞어서 마시는 ‘소맥’을 경험하였다.

At the restaurant, they reportedly enjoyed fried chicken along with so-maek, a mix of soju and beer.
These days the phrase “chi-maek” — short for chicken and beer — is widely used, and Huang fully embraced the experience, trying both chi-maek and so-maek.

현재 젠슨 황은 엔비디아의 주요 공급처인 중국을 잃게 되고, 한국이 전세계적으로 AI의 첨병 역할을 함에 따라, 그 시장의 엄청난 가능성을 보고 2030년까지 26만개의 칩을 공급하기로 전격적으로 약속하였다. 그가 한국에 호감을 갖고 있는 것도 물론이겠지만 역시 사업가의 마인드로 한국을 전격 방문한 것이다. 하지만 보통의 사업가들과는 달리 굉장히 친근한 방식으로 사람들에게 다가왔으며, 한국인들은 그를 연예인처럼 생각하는 듯하다. 이러한 반응에 젠슨황 또한 기분이 싫지는 않은 것 같다. 그 치맥 이후 치킨집앞에서 사람들에게 치킨과 ‘바나나우유’를 나눠주고 내내 웃음꽃이 만발하였다.

With NVIDIA at risk of losing China, one of its major customers, and with South Korea rapidly emerging as a global AI powerhouse, Huang appears to recognize Korea’s immense market potential.
He committed to supplying 260,000 chips by 2030 — a decisive move reflecting both strategic interest and confidence in Korea.
Although he undoubtedly holds genuine affection for the country, his visit also carries the sharp business instincts of a seasoned businessman.
Yet, unlike many business leaders, he engaged with the public in an exceptionally approachable way.
To Koreans, he seems almost like a celebrity, and he appears to enjoy the attention — smiling widely as he handed out chicken and even banana milk to people outside the restaurant.

한국에서는 식사를 다 같이 하면 보통은 나이 먹은 이가 식사값을 계산을 하곤 한다. 이 세사람 중에 젠슨황이 63세로 제일 형이다. 하지만 이날은 삼성전자와 현대 자동차 측에서 지불했다고 한다. 손님이 오셨으니 당연한 거 아닌가. 하지만 시가총액을 따지면 삼성전자와 현대자동차 두 회사를 합쳐도 엔비디아의 시가총액에 미치지 못한다. 우리나라 얼른 부자되자. 하하하.

In Korea, it is customary for the eldest person at a meal to pay the bill.
Among the three business leaders, Jensen Huang — at age 63 — was the oldest.
However, it is said that Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor picked up the check, as is customary for welcoming a guest.
But in terms of market capitalization, the combined value of Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor still falls short of NVIDIA alone.

Let’s hope Korea becomes just as wealthy soon.
